The Lord told Moses, “Now you will see what I will do to the king. I will let My people go. I appeared as Almighty God to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, but I didn’t make myself known to them by My holy name, the Lord. I also made My covenant which is to give them Canaan’s land. I have heard the groaning of the Israelites too, whom the Egyptians have enslaved, and I remembered my covenant. Tell the Israelites that I am the Lord. I will rescue you and set you free from your slavery to the Egyptians. I will punish the Egyptians with My mighty arm to save you. I will make you God’s people. I will bring you to the land that I promised to give to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, and give it to you as your own possession. I am the Lord.” Now Moses had said this to the Israelites, but they wouldn’t pay attention to him because of their spirit being broken by their slavery. The Lord told Moses, “Go to the king of Egypt and tell him to let the Israelites leave his land.” Moses said in reply, “The Israelites won’t listen to me; why should the king? I am a poor speaker.” The Lord said to Moses and Aaron, “Tell the Israelites and Egyptian king that I ordered you to lead the Israelites out of Egypt.” Those were the men who told the Egyptian’s king to break free of the Israelites.
Jacob, Levi and Kohath were the ancestors of the clans. Amram was the son of Kohath and married Jochebed, who bore Aaron and Moses. Aaron married Elisheba, and their descendants were the heads of the families and the clans of Levi’s tribe. Aaron and Moses were the ones to lead Israel’s tribes out of Egypt.
