Genesis Chapter 47 Bible Study

Joseph brings his family, including his father Jacob and his brothers, before Pharaoh, the ruler of Egypt. Pharaoh is pleased to meet Joseph's family and grants them permission to settle in the fertile region of Goshen. Jacob blesses Pharaoh and the encounter establishes a friendly relationship between Jacob's family and the Egyptian ruler. Jacob is then introduced to Pharaoh and he blesses him. Pharaoh asked about Jacob's age, to which Jacob responds that he has lived for 130 years, acknowledging that his years have been filled with hardship.

Later, a severe famine continues to afflict the land, prompting Joseph to take measures to ensure that people have enough food to survive. He establishes a system where the Egyptians exchange their money, livestock, and eventually their land for food, effectively making Pharaoh the owner of much of the land and resources in Egypt. Egypt was constantly full of things to buy there.

The chapter also records the migration of the Hebrews to Goshen, a region known for its fertility. This move provides them with a place to settle and thrive during the ongoing famine. As a result of Joseph's wisdom and foresight, Pharaoh's authority and wealth increase substantially, solidifying Joseph's position as a trusted and influential representation in all of the country of Egypt.

This chapter highlights themes of providence, family reunion, and the fulfillment of God's plan through Joseph's remarkable journey from being a slave for his brothers to a remarkable man of Egypt once again.
