Genesis Chapter 34 Bible Study

In Genesis 34, we encounter the story of Dinah, the daughter of Jacob and Leah. As the family settles in the land of Canaan, Dinah ventures out to explore her surroundings. However, Shechem, a prince of the land, sees her and becomes infatuated with her. He takes Dinah and defiles her, an act that deeply angers her brothers, Simeon and Levi.

When Shechem expresses his desire to marry Dinah, Jacob's sons agree on a plan to avenge their sister's honor. They deceitfully suggest to the people of Shechem's city that they can only intermarry if all the males are circumcised. The people of the city agree and undergo the procedure. On the third day after the circumcision, when they are in pain and vulnerable, Simeon and Levi attack the city, killing all the men, including Shechem and his father.

Jacob is distressed by his sons actions and fears retaliation from neighboring tribes. Nevertheless, his sons defend their actions, emphasizing their duty to protect their sister's honor. The chapter concludes with Jacob's family leaving the area and God reaffirming His covenant with Jacob.
