Genesis Chapter 25 Bible Study

Abraham again took another wife whom he liked, Keturah. And she bore him Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah, 6 sons in all. Jokshan begot Sheba and Dedan, 2 sons in total. Dedan’s sons were Asshurim, Letushim, and Leummim, and Midian’s sons were Ephah, Epher, Hanoch, Abidah, and Eldaah. These were Keturah’s children. And Abraham gave all that he had to Isaac. But Abraham gave precious gifts to the sons of the concubines which Abraham had; and while he was still living in the concubines, he sent them eastward, away from Isaac, his son, to the east countryside. Abraham lived 175 years of his life. Then Abraham took his last breath and died in a good age for his people. Isaac and Ishmael, 2 of Abraham’s sons, buried him in Machpelah in a cave near the field of Ephron which Abraham purchased from Heth’s sons. There Abraham and Sarah, his wife, were hidden underground. And it came to pass, after the death of Abraham, that God blessed Isaac and he resided at Beer Lahai Roi.

Now this is the genealogy of Ishmael, Abraham’s son, whom Hagar the Egyptian, Sarah’s maidservant, bore to Abraham. And these were the names of the sons of Ishmael according to their generations: the firstborn, Nebajoth; then Kedar, Adbeel, Mibsam, Mishma, Dumah, Massa, Hadar, Tema, Jetur, Naphish and Kedemah, 12 sons in all. These were the sons of Ishmael’s names, by their towns and settlements, according to their nations. Ishmael served 137 years of his life also when he took his last breath and died in the presence gathered of his people. This is the genealogy of Isaac, Abraham’s son. Abraham begot him. Isaac was forty years old when he took Rebekah as his wife. Now Isaac was with the Lord for his wife because she didn’t have any children. The Lord listened to his plea and Rebekah conceived. But the children struggled together within her; and she said, “If all is well, why am I feeling sad like this?” So she went to question the Lord. And the Lord said to her: “Two nations are currently inside your womb and shall be divided as one body; one crowd of people shall be mightier than the other and the older shall help the younger.” So when her days were fulfilled for her to give birth, indeed there were twins in her womb. And the first came out red. He was like a hairy garment all over; so they called him Esau. Afterward his brother came out, and his hand took hold of Esau’s heel; so he was named Jacob.

Isaac was sixty years old when she bore them. So the boys grew. Esau was a skillful hunter, a man of the field; but Jacob was a mild man, dwelling in tents. And Isaac loved Esau because he ate, but Rebekah loved Jacob. Now Jacob cooked a special stew; and Esau came in from the field, being worn out. Esau said to Jacob, “Please feed me with red stew, for I am tired of walking into this field.” Therefore his name was called Edom. But Jacob said, “Sell me your birthright as of this day.” And Esau said, “Look, I am getting ready to die, so what is this birthright to me?” Then Jacob said, “Promise me.” So Esau promised to Jacob, and sold his birthright. And Jacob gave Esau bread and a small stew of lentils; then he ate and drank, rose up and departed. Thus Esau felt a deep repugnance for his birthright to be sold.
