Genesis Chapter 22 Bible Study

Now it came to pass after these things that God tested Abraham, and said to him, “Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am. What do you need from me?” Then He said, “Take now your son Isaac whom you love, go to Moriah and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.” So Abraham rose early in the morning and got on his donkey, took two of his young men and Isaac his son with him; and divided the wood apart for the burnt offering, arose and went to the place which God had talked about. On the third day, Abraham lifted his eyes and saw the place from afar off. And Abraham said to his young men, “Stay here with the donkey; the lad and I will go yonder and worship and will come back to you.” So Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on Isaac; and he took the fire and a knife in his hand with both of them going together. But Isaac called out to Abraham his father, “My father, where are you?” And he said, “Here I am, my son.”

Then he said, “Look at the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for our burnt offering?” And Abraham said, “My son, God will provide for Himself the lamb for our burnt offering to take care of.” So the two of them went together. Then they came to the place of which God had described again. Abraham built an altar there and placed the wood in order; and he bound Isaac and laid him on the altar near the wood. And Abraham stretched out his hand and took the knife to kill his son out of the altar. But the Angel of the Lord called to him from heaven, “Abraham, Abraham!” So he said, “Here I am, my angel.” And He said, “Do not lay your hand nor do anything else for the lad, for now I know that you fear God, since you have not taken back your only son from Me.” Then Abraham looked up with his eyes open wide, and behind him was a ram caught in a thicket by its side horns. Abraham departed, took the ram and offered it up for a burnt offering instead of Isaac, his son. And Abraham called the place, The-Lord-Will-Provide.

Then the Angel of the Lord called to Abraham a second time out of heaven, and said: “Because you have done this thing, and have not withheld your son, I will bless you a great blessing, and I will increase your descendants as the stars of the heaven and as the sand which is on the seashore; and your descendants shall possess the gate of their enemies. In your seed all the earth’s nations will be blessed, because you have listened carefully to My voice.” So Abraham departed with his young men to Beersheba and resided there.
