John Chapter 21 Bible Study

After Jesus appeared to the disciples in Jerusalem, He revealed Himself to them once again at the Sea of Tiberias. The group included Simon Peter, Thomas, Nathanael, the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples. Simon Peter announced that he was going fishing, and the others decided to join him. They went out in a boat but caught nothing throughout the night. As day was breaking, Jesus stood on the beach, yet the disciples did not recognize Him. Jesus asked if they had any food, to which they replied no. He instructed them to cast the net on the right side of the boat, and when they did, they caught an abundance of fish. The beloved disciple recognized Jesus and informed Peter. Overwhelmed with joy, Peter put on his outer garment and jumped into the sea to reach Jesus. The rest of the disciples arrived in the boat, dragging the net full of fish to the shore.

Upon reaching the shore, the disciples saw that Jesus had prepared a charcoal fire with fish and bread. Jesus requested some of the fish they had just caught, and Peter went aboard the boat to bring the net ashore, which contained 153 large fish. Despite the large quantity, the net did not break. Jesus invited them to eat breakfast, and he personally served them bread and fish. This was the third time Jesus appeared to the disciples after His resurrection.

After they finished eating, Jesus turned His attention to Simon Peter and asked him three times if he loved Him. Each time, Peter affirmed his affection for Jesus. In response, Jesus instructed Peter to feed His lambs and tend His sheep. This exchange left Peter feeling saddened by the repetition of the question, but he reaffirmed his love for Jesus. Jesus then prophesied that when Peter grew old, he would stretch out his hands and be taken where he did not wish to go, indicating the type of death Peter would face. After these words, Jesus told Peter to follow Him.

Peter noticed the disciple whom Jesus loved following them and asked Jesus about his fate. Jesus replied that it was not Peter's concern, and he should focus on following Him. The rumor circulated among the disciples that this beloved disciple would not die, but Jesus did not explicitly say so. The disciple providing this account affirms the truthfulness of his testimony and acknowledges that there is much more Jesus did that could not be fully recorded.
