On the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and found the stone rolled away. Distressed, she ran to inform Simon Peter and the other disciple whom Jesus loved, saying that someone had taken the Lord's body. Peter and the other disciple went to the tomb, with the latter arriving first. He saw the linen cloths but did not enter. Peter arrived and went inside, observing the linen cloths and a separate folded cloth. The other disciple entered as well and believed, although they did not yet understand Jesus' resurrection. They then returned to their homes.
Meanwhile, Mary remained near the tomb, weeping. As she looked inside, she saw two angels in white seated where Jesus' body had been. They asked her why she was weeping, and she explained that someone had taken the Lord's body. Turning around, Mary saw Jesus but did not recognize Him. Jesus asked her why she was weeping and whom she was looking for. Thinking He was the gardener, Mary asked if He knew where Jesus' body was. Jesus called her by name, and she recognized Him as her Teacher. Jesus instructed her not to cling to Him, as He had not ascended to the Father yet. He told her to go and inform His disciples that He was returning to His Father, their Father, and to His God, their God. Mary went to the disciples and proclaimed, "I have seen the Lord!" She shared with them what Jesus had told her.
Later that same day, the disciples were gathered behind locked doors due to fear. Jesus appeared among them, offering His peace. He showed them His hands and side, and the disciples rejoiced upon seeing the risen Lord. Jesus greeted them with peace again, declaring that just as the Father had sent Him, He was sending them. He then breathed on them, giving them the Holy Spirit, and bestowed upon them the authority to forgive or retain sins.
However, Thomas, one of the Twelve, was not present when Jesus appeared to the disciples. They informed Thomas that they had seen the Lord, but he doubted their words. Thomas insisted that unless he saw the nail marks in Jesus' hands and put his finger in His side, he would not believe. Eight days later, when Thomas was with the disciples, Jesus appeared in their midst and greeted them with peace. He invited Thomas to examine His hands and side and encouraged him to believe. Overwhelmed, Thomas acknowledged Jesus as his Lord and God. Jesus blessed those who believed without seeing Him.
It is important to note that Jesus performed many other signs before His disciples that are not recorded in this account. However, the purpose of these written words is to inspire belief in Jesus as the Christ, the Son of God, and through that belief, to receive eternal life in His name.
