A man named Lazarus was ill; he was from Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. This was the Mary who had perfumed oil being poured on the Lord and wiped his feet dry with her hair; it was Lazarus who needed help. So his sisters sent a message saying, “Lord, see, the one you have cared for is sick.” When Jesus heard it, He said, “This sickness is not meant to end in complete death; but is for God’s glory, so that the Son of God may be rejoiced through it.” Jesus loved Martha, Mary and Lazarus; however, when he saw that Lazarus was sick, he stayed in that place for two whole days. After that, He said to the disciples: “Let us go into the city of Judea again.” The disciples said: “Rabbi, just lately the Judeans are asking to throw you with stones, and are you going there again?” Jesus responded: “There are 12 hours of daylight, are there not? If anyone walks in daylight, he doesn’t fall because he sees the world’s light.
But if someone walks in the darkness, he falls because the light isn’t in him.” After Jesus said those things, He added: “Our friend, Lazarus, has slept, but I am going there to wake him up.” The disciples said to Him: “Lord, if he is sleeping now, he will get better.” Jesus had talked about his death. They imagined He was also speaking about taking His rest in sleep. Jesus said to them: “Lazarus has now died, and I praise for your sake that I wasn’t there so that you may believe. But let us go to him.” Thomas, who was called the Twin, said to his fellow disciples: “Let us also proceed, that we may die with him.”

However, when he saw that Lazarus was sick, he stayed in that place for two whole days. After that, He said to the disciples, "Let us go into the city of Judea again." The disciples said, "Rabbi, just lately the Judeans are asking to throw stones at you, and are you going there again?" Jesus responded, "There are 12 hours of daylight, are there not? If anyone walks in daylight, he doesn't fall because he sees the world's light. But if someone walks in the darkness, he falls because the light isn't in him." After Jesus said those things, He added, "Our friend, Lazarus, has slept, but I am going there to wake him up." The disciples said to Him, "Lord, if he is sleeping now, he will get better." Jesus had talked about his death. They imagined He was also speaking about taking His rest in sleep. Thomas, who was called the Twin, said to his fellow disciples, "Let us also proceed, that we may die with him." When Jesus was there, He found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb for 4 days. Bethany was near Jerusalem. Many of the Jews went to Martha and Mary to console them concerning Lazarus, their brother. When Martha saw that Jesus was coming, she went to meet him, but Mary was sitting at home. Martha then said to Jesus, "Lord, if You have been here, my brother wouldn't die. Yet even now I know that whatever You inquire God for, God will give You." Jesus said to her, "Your brother will rise." Martha said, "I know that he will rise in Your resurrection on the last day." Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. The one who exercises faith in Me, even though he dies, will have life; and everyone who is living and exercises faith in Me will never die at all. Do you believe that?" Martha said, "Yes, Lord, I have believed that You are the Christ, the Son of God, the one who has come into the world."
When she had said it, she went off and called Mary, her sister, saying, "The Teacher is here and is calling you." On hearing this, she got up and went to Him. Jesus had not come into the village, but He was still with Martha where she met Him. When the Jews were with Mary in the house saw her going out after being consoled, they followed behind her, thinking that she was walking to the tomb to weep there. When Mary arrived where Jesus was and caught sight, she fell at His feet and said, "Lord, if You have been here, my brother wouldn't have died." When Jesus and the Jews wept, Jesus groaned within Himself and became deeply troubled. Jesus asked, "Where have you laid him?" They said, "Lord, come and see." Jesus burst into tears. The Jews said, "What affection he had for him!" Some of them asked, "Could not that man who opened the blind man's eyes prevent him from dying?" Jesus came to the tomb after groaning. It was a cave with a stone against it. Jesus said, "Take the stone away." Martha said, "Lord, he must smell, for it has been 4 days." Jesus said, "Did I not tell you that if you would believe, you would see God's glory?" So they removed the stone. Jesus raised His eyes toward heaven and said, "Father, I thank you that you heard Me. True, I knew that you hear Me, but I spoke to the crowd standing around, so that they may know that you sent me." When He had talked about those things, He cried, "Lazarus, come out!" The man came out with his feet and hands with wrappings, and his face was wrapped in cloth. Jesus said to them, "Free him and let him go." The Jews who had come to Mary and witnessed what Jesus did put faith in him, but some went to the Pharisees and talked about what Jesus had done. The chief priests and Pharisees gathered the Sanhedrin and said, "What are we to do, for this man performs miracles? If we let him go on, the Romans will come and remove both our place and nation." But Caiaphas said, "You don't know anything, and yet it has reasoned that it is for one man to die rather than the whole nation to be destroyed." That day, they conspired to kill him because of prophesying about Jesus and His children dying. Jesus went to a city called Ephraim, and He stayed there with the disciples. Many people went up to Jerusalem to cleanse themselves before Passover. They were looking for Jesus, wondering if He would come to the festival. If anyone got to know where Jesus was, he should report it so that the chief priests and Pharisees would take Him away.
