John Chapter 6

Afterwards, Jesus set out across Tiberias, also known as the Sea of Galilee, and a large multitude of people followed Him because they were looking at the magnificent signs that He performed on the people who were sick and needed healing right away.

Jesus came to a mountain and sat there with the disciples. Now the Passover was near. When Jesus raised His eyes and saw that a large crowd was walking towards Him, He told Philip, "Where can we buy bread for those hungry people to eat?" However, He was saying it to test Philip, for He knew what He was about to accomplish.

Philip answered in response to Jesus, "Two hundred denarii worth of bread is not enough to give the people even a little." Andrew, one of His disciples, Simon Peter's brother, told Him that there was a little boy with five barley loaves of bread and two small fish.

Jesus said to Philip to have the men sit down, about 5,000, for there was much grass in that place. Jesus took the bread and He brought it to the men after giving thanks; He did the same thing with the fish. The men had as much as they wanted. When they had their fill and were full, Jesus said, "Gather together the small pieces so that nothing would be wasted." They gathered the pieces with twelve fragments of baskets being eaten by the five barley loaves of bread.

When the people saw the wonderful sign that Jesus performed, He said, "Really, this is the magnificent Prophet who is to come into the world." Jesus, knowing that they were about to come and seize Him to make Him King, departed from the mountain and was all alone. Evening fell, and when His disciples came into the sea, they came to Capernaum on a boat. It was dark and Jesus hadn't come to them. The sea was rough because there was a strong wind that blew in it. When they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking to the boat, and they were afraid. Jesus said to the disciples, "It is I; do not be afraid."

They were willing to carry Him into the boat, and the boat was there at the land to where they had been headed. The next day, the crowd where they were staying near the sea saw that there was no boat. A small one had been there, but Jesus boarded the boat with His disciples, for His disciples had gone. Tiberias' boats were there; however, they were at the place where the disciples ate the bread, which the Lord had given. When the crowd saw that neither Jesus nor His boat were there, they went to Capernaum to look for Jesus. When they found Jesus, they said, "Teacher, when did you arrive?" Jesus said to them, "I say to you, you are looking for Me because you ate the loaves and were satisfied. Work for everlasting life, for the Father God Himself has put on its seal of approval."

They said to Him, "What must we do to carry out God's works?" Jesus said, "To exercise faith in the one who has sent Me. This is the work of God." They said to Him, "What work are you doing as a sign for us? Our forefathers ate manna in the wilderness, just as it is written." Then Jesus said, "My Father gives you the true bread from heaven. The bread of God is the one who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world." They said to Him, "Lord, always give us this bread." Jesus said, "I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to Me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in Me shall not thirst. No one can come to Me unless the Father beckons. Those who have seen Me haven't believed in Me, for whoever exercises faith will have everlasting life, and I will raise him up on the last day. This is the will of My Father."

The Jews murmured about Jesus, "Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose mother and father we know?" Jesus said, "Stop murmuring amongst yourselves. Everyone who has listened to the Father will come to Me. I say to you, whoever believes will have eternal life. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. The bread that I will give is My flesh for the life of the world." The Jews began to argue, saying, "How can this man bring His flesh to eat?" Jesus said, "Unless you eat of the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you shall not have life within you. Whoever feeds on My flesh and drinks My blood has everlasting life, and he will remain in union with Me, and I in union with him. Just as the living Father sent Me and I live because of the Father, so also the one who feeds on Me will live because of Me." He was teaching these words at a synagogue in Capernaum.

The disciples asked, "This speech is shocking; how can we listen to it?" Jesus said, "The words that I said are spirit and life. Does this stumble you?" Simon Peter said, "You have the words of eternal life and are the Son of God." Jesus said, "One of you is going to betray Me." He was speaking of Judas of Simon Iscariot, one of the twelve disciples.
