Nicodemus was a Jewish leader and a member of the Pharisees. Nicodemus said to Jesus, “Teacher, You are the one true God. No one could work out miracles unless God were with him.” Jesus said to Nicodemus, “The truth is this: no one can see the kingdom of God without being born again.” Nicodemus asked, “How can a man be born again?” Jesus said, “I’m speaking the truth to you. Nobody can go into the kingdom without being born of water and the Spirit. A person is born physically of human parents, but is born spiritually in the Spirit. I tell you that you must all be born again. The wind blows wherever it wishes; you hear its sound, but can’t tell where it’s coming from or going. It is like that with everyone who is born of the Spirit.” Nicodemus asked, “How can this be?” Jesus said, “You are a great teacher in Israel, and yet you don’t teach it to us? Truthfully, we talk about what we clearly know and give you the details of what we’ve not seen, yet none of the people will believe in My telling. You still can’t trust Me when I tell you about other worldly things; how can you recognize Me, then, when I describe focusing on heavenly things above? And no one has ever gone up to heaven except the Son of Man, who came down from heaven.”
As Moses lifted up the bronze snake, the Son of Man must be lifted up as well. For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him shall not die but have eternal life. God sent His Son to be a Savior of the world. Those who believe in the Son are not judged. This is how the judgment works; the light has come into the world. The people who do evil things will not come to the light because they don’t want their evil deeds shown up. Those who do true things will come to the light in order that the light may show that what the people did was in God’s obedience.
After this, Jesus and His disciples went to Judea, where He baptized His disciples. John also was baptizing in Aenon, not far from Salim, because plenty of water was there in that place. People were coming to John and getting baptized also. Some of John’s disciples were arguing with a Jew about the importance of washing properly. So John’s disciples came up to John and asked, “Teacher, do you recall the man who came with you to the east side of the Jordan River and spoke to you? He is baptizing now, and everyone is going to him!” John said, “Nobody shall have anything unless God gives it. You are my witnesses of my saying, ‘I am not the Messiah.’ The bridegroom is the one to belong with the bride, but I, the bridegroom’s friend, who stands by and listens to the bridegroom’s voice will be glad. He must become more important while I become less important.”
He who comes down from heaven is greater than who belongs to the earth. He tells what He has seen and heard, yet no one can accept His message. Whoever accepts God’s message will confirm that God is truthful. The one whom God has sent speaks God’s words with the fullness of His Spirit. The Father loves His Son and has put everything in His power. Whoever believes in the Son will have eternal life; whoever disobeys the Son will remain under God’s punishment.
