John Chapter 3

There was a prominent ruler of the Jews named Nicodemus, who was a leader among the Pharisees. He came to Jesus during the night and said, "Rabbi, we know that you have come from God as a teacher, for no one can perform the signs and miracles you do unless God is with him." Jesus answered him plainly, "Truly, I tell you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God." Nicodemus replied, "How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter his mother's womb a second time to be born?" Jesus responded, "Truly, I tell you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. What is born of the flesh is flesh, and what is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not be astonished that I said to you, 'You must be born again.' The wind blows wherever it pleases, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit."

Nicodemus asked, "How can these things be?" Jesus replied, "Are you a teacher of Israel and yet you do not understand these things? Truly, I tell you, we speak of what we know and bear witness to what we have seen, but you do not receive our testimony. If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things? No one has ascended into heaven except the one who descended from heaven—the Son of Man. Just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life."

"For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed. But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God."

Afterward, Jesus and His disciples went into the Judean countryside, where He spent time with them and baptized. Meanwhile, John was also baptizing in Aenon near Salim, because there was an abundance of water there, and people were coming and being baptized. This led to a discussion between John's disciples and a Jewish person about purification. They went to John and said, "Rabbi, the man who was with you on the other side of the Jordan, the one you testified about—look, he is baptizing, and everyone is going to him." John replied, "A person can only receive what is given to them from heaven. You yourselves can testify that I said, 'I am not the Christ but am sent ahead of him.' The bride belongs to the bridegroom. The friend who attends the bridegroom waits and listens for him, and is full of joy when he hears the bridegroom's voice. That joy is mine, and it is now complete. He must become greater; I must become less."

The one who comes from above is above all; the one who is from the earth belongs to the earth and speaks as one from the earth. The one who comes from heaven is above all. He testifies to what he has seen and heard, yet no one accepts his testimony. Whoever has accepted it has certified that God is truthful. For the one whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for God gives the Spirit without limit. The Father loves the Son and has placed everything in his hands. Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God's wrath remains on them.

As Jesus attended the Passover, many were amazed by His miraculous signs, but He did not entrust Himself to them, for He knew all people and understood their true nature.
