Genesis Chapter 16 Bible Study

Sarai had no children that were being born. She had an Egyptian maidservant whose name was Hagar. Sarai said to Abram to go into her maid, Hagar, and tell him about obtaining the children that were new to her. Abram heeded Sarai’s word. Sarai took Hagar and took her husband, Abram, to be his wife. He went into Hagar and finally consented. When Sarai had conceived, her mistress was very angry. The mistress said, “I gave my maid into your kind heart and affection, and when she had conceived, I became displeased in her eyes. The Lord will judge between you and me.” Abram said: “Your maid’s now in your hand; do it to her as you wish.” Sarai had a serious talk with her and ran away into her presence. The angel of the Lord found the maid near Shur, where there was lots of water. The angel asked her where she was going, and she responded by telling her that she was fleeing from Sarai.

The angel told the maid to submit herself unto her hand and to multiply her descendants abundantly in great multitude. The angel of the Lord also told the maid to bear a son and call his name Ishmael because of his love and affection and to reside in the brethren’s presence. The name of the well was Beer Lahai Roi, officially, the Lord’s name was The God Who Sees, El Roi. Abram was 86 years old when Hagar bore Abram’s son, Ishmael, back to him.
