Genesis Chapter 12 Bible Study

Now the Lord had made Abram a promise that He will make the nation great under His name, to bless the people who bless them and curse those who curse other people. All the descendants of the earth shall call themselves blessed. Abram will be a blessing for every nation and tribe. As the Lord had finished speaking these words, Abram departed from Him and Lot was with Abram. Abram was 75 years old when he left the country of Haran. Abram took Sarai and Lot’s son with all their possessions and people and left to the land of Canaan. Abram went through to the land of Shechem.

The Canaanites were in the land then. The Lord said to Abram that He would give his descendants the land. Abram built the Lord an altar there. He moved to the east side of the mountain. He pitched the tent with Ai on the east and Bethel to the west; he called on the Lord’s name, after that, Abram moved toward the South. There was a famine in Egypt, and Abram saw Sarai, a woman with a beautiful countenance. Abram tells Sarai that when the Egyptians see her, they will kill Abram, but they will let Sarai live if she is his sister.

When Abram came to Egypt, the Egyptian princes saw that Sarai was very beautiful. They commended her to Pharaoh. The woman was taken to Pharaoh’s house and Abram made her well for his sake. The Lord was getting angry at Abram for what he had done, so he sent plagues to Pharaoh and his house because of Sarai, Abram’s wife. The Lord said, “What have you done to me? Why didn’t you declare to me that Sarai was your wife? Here is Sarai; take her and go your way.” Pharaoh was concerned about his men, so they sent them away, Abram’s wife and all that he had.
