Genesis Chapter 40 Bible Study

Some time later, Egypt’s wine steward king and the chief baker offended the king. The king was angry and put both of them in prison where Joseph was being kept. They spent a long time there and Joseph became a servant of them. 

One night, the chief baker and the chief wine steward each had a dream. They were worried about that and asked Joseph to interpret their dreams.

The wine steward said that in his dream, he saw a grapevine with three branches. As soon as the grapes ripened, he squeezed them into the king’s cup and gave it to him. Joseph explained that the three branches represented three days. Within three days, he said, the wine steward would be released from prison and restored to his former position. Joseph then asked him to remember him and speak to the king on his behalf, since he had done nothing to deserve being put in prison.

Encouraged by this interpretation, the chief baker shared his dream. He said that he was carrying three baskets of bread on his head, and birds were eating from the top basket that held baked goods for the king. Joseph explained that the three baskets also represented three days. However, he said that the baker would be executed, his body hung on a pole, and birds would eat his flesh.

Three days later, on the king’s birthday, everything happened exactly as Joseph had foretold. But the wine steward forgot all about Joseph.
