Genesis Chapter 38 Bible Study

Judah left his brothers to stay with Hirah, a man from the town of Adullum. He met a young Canaanite woman, the daughter of Shua, and married her. They had sons, Er, Onan and Shelah. His first son, Er, married Tamar, but his conduct was bad and it displeased the Lord, so the Lord killed him. Judah told Onan, Er’s brother, to go and sleep with his brother’s widow. He knew that the children wouldn’t belong to him, so he didn’t want to have children with her. This made the Lord displeased and the Lord killed him as well. Judah sent Tamar to his father’s house because he was afraid that Shelah would be killed. 

After Judah had finished his mourning time for his wife’s death, he and his friend Hirah went to Timnah where his sheep were sheared. Tamar, his daughter-in-law, changed from the widow’s clothes, covered her face with a veil and pretended that she was a prostitute. She slept with Judah for the seal with its cord and walking stick and became pregnant. After that, Tamar put her widow’s clothes back on. Judah’s friend, Hirah, tried to find her, but he couldn’t. Three months later, Judah heard that she was pregnant and brought her back to him for punishment; however, Judah had found out that he was the man who slept with her and failed in his obligation to her by not giving Shelah in marriage. He never had intercourse with her again. Tamar had twins, Perez, who was supposed to be second, but born first from breaking through, and Zerah, who was supposed to be first, but not because of a red thread around his arm.
