Genesis Chapter 37 Bible Study

This is the story of Jacob’s family in Canaan. Joseph, a 17-year-old man, took care of the sheep and goats. Jacob loved Joseph the most and made a long robe with full sleeves for him. His brothers hated Joseph because of that. Joseph had a dream in the field about the sheaf of wheat standing up straight while he was working, and his brothers formed a circle and bowed down to it. They hated Joseph even more bec

ause of what he said about those dreams. Joseph had another dream about seeing the sun, moon and 11 stars bowing down to him. Jacob thought the dream didn't make sense, but he kept thinking about it from all sides. 

One day Jacob asked Joseph to go to Shechem to check his brothers and flocks if they were all safe. Joseph went there, but they left, so he went to Dothan and found them there. They planned to kill Joseph because they wanted to see how his dream goes. Reuben, Leah’s son, suggested that Joseph will be thrown into the well in the wilderness and not be killed and planned to save him later. When Joseph went to his brothers, they ripped off his long robe with full sleeves and threw him into the dry well. 

A group of Ishmaelites were traveling from Gilead to Egypt with their camels, spices and resins. Judah told his brothers to sell the Ishmaelites and his brothers sold him for 20 pieces of silver. Joseph was taken to Egypt with them.

When Reuben saw that Joseph wasn’t there, he was sorrowful and tore his clothes. Reuben’s brothers killed the goat and dipped Joseph’s robe with blood. They took the robe to their father to make him believe that a wild animal had killed him. Jacob, Joseph’s father, mourned for his son for a long time. Meanwhile in Egypt, the Midianites sold Joseph to Potiphar, the captain of the palace guard.
