Genesis Chapter 35 Bible Study

God told Jacob to go to Bethel, live and build an altar. So Jacob said to his family to get rid of all foreign gods, purify themselves and wear clean clothes. Before leaving for Bethel, where God appeared to Jacob when he was running away from Esau, he buried all the foreign gods under the oak tree. Jacob came to Luz which is now known as Bethel, in the land of Canaan and built an altar there and named the place for the God of Bethel. Rebecca’s nurse, Deborah, died and he named the place she was buried, “Oak of Weeping.”

God appeared again and blessed him and said to him, “Your name will be changed from Jacob to Israel. I am God Almighty. You will be the ancestor of many kings and I will give this land to you and your descendants.” Jacob set up a memorial stone, blessed over it and named the place Bethel. After they left Bethel, Rachel had another boy, but she died from difficult labor. Rachel named her son Benoni, but his father named him Benjamin. She was buried in Ephrath which was now known as Bethlehem.

Jacob had twelve sons. Leah’s sons were Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar and Zebulun. Rachel’s sons were Joseph and Benjamin. Rachel’s slave, Bilhah’s sons were Dan and Naphtali. Leah’s slave, Zilpah’s sons were Gad and Asher.

Jacob went to his father, Isaac, at Mamre where Abraham and Isaac lived. Isaac was 180 years old and died. His sons, Esau and Jacob, buried him.
