Genesis Chapter 34 Bible Study

One day, Dinah, Jacob and Leah’s daughter, went to see some of the women Canaanites. When Shechem, Hamor’s son, saw Dinah, he took and violated her. But he fell in love and wanted to marry her. Jacob learned this disgraced happening and his sons couldn’t do anything. When Shechem’s father Hamor came and asked for the marriage of his son and Dinah, Jacob and his sons were shocked and furious. Hamor said, “Please let my son, Shechem, marry her. Let us make an agreement for intermarriage between our people and yours. Then you may stay in our country as long as you wish.” 

Shechem said that he would give them presents and to set the bride payment. Jacob’s sons responded that they can’t marry any man who is uncircumcised. “If his people will be circumcised, we will agree to intermarriage and settle to become one people with you.” Shechem was the most important family member and he married Jacob’s daughter badly, so he and Hamor, his father, decided to tell all males to circumcise and all the males agreed to do that. 

Three days later, while they were still in pain from the circumcision, Simeon and Levi, Dinah’s brothers, killed all the men of the city including Hamor and Shechem. After that, they took the flocks, cattle, donkeys, everything in the city, houses and fields that were worth of value and captured the women and children. Jacob told Simeon and Levi that the action may cause another attack from the people in the other lands and then his family will be destroyed.
