Genesis Chapter 32 Bible Study

Jacob encountered angels along the way, so he named the place Mahanaim. Jacob’s messengers were sent to Esau to say that he, Esau’s obedient servant had been staying with Laban and delayed his return up to now and he owns cattle, donkeys, sheep, goats and slaves and was hoping for Esau’s favor. When the messengers came back, they said, “Esau is on the way with 400 men to meet you.” Jacob was scared and divided the people, goats, sheep, cattle and camels into two groups to save at least half of what he had from Esau’s attacks. Jacob prayed, “O Lord, save me from my brother Esau, for I am afraid that he is coming to destroy us all.” 

After spending the night there, Jacob chose his livestock as a present for Esau and put one of his servants in charge for each herd. He ordered each servant to say the same answer to Esau which is, “Our master and your servant is Jacob who is right behind us.” Jacob sent the gifts ahead of him and spent the night in camp.

On the very same night, Jacob got up and crossed the river of Jabbok with his family and all that he owned and stayed behind alone. Just then, a man was wrestling with him before daybreak. The man hit Jacob on the hip. Jacob didn’t let him go until he had a blessing upon him, and the man changed Jacob’s name to Israel because he had won the battle and struggled with God and with men. The man blessed Jacob without telling his name. Jacob named the place, Peniel, where he saw God face-to-face and was still alive. When the sun rose, Jacob was leaving Peniel and limping because of his hip.
