Genesis Chapter 29 Bible Study

Jacob continued toward the East and saw a well with three flocks of sheep lying around it. Each of the three sheep flocks had a large stone over the well opening. Whenever all of the flocks came, the shepherds would roll back the stone and water them. After that, they would put the stone back in place. Jacob asked the shepherds, “My friends, do you know Laban, the son of Nahor?” They said, “Yes, Laban is doing well. His daughter, Rachel, is coming with his flock.” When Jacob saw Rachel with his uncle’s flock, he went to the well, rolled the stone back and watered the sheep. Then he kissed Rachel and began to cry for joy, saying, “I am your father’s relative, the son of Rebecca.” When Laban heard about Jacob, he ran to meet him and brought him home. He said, “ You are my own flesh and blood.” 

Since Jacob was in love with his younger daughter, Rachel, he promised that he would work for 7 years to marry her. After he finished for 7 years, Laban gave a wedding feast and invited everyone. But that night, he took Leah to Jacob, not Rachel. The next morning, Jacob found out about it and asked,  “Why did you do this to me?” Laban answered, “It is not the custom to marry the younger daughter before the older. Please wait until the celebrations are finished, and I will give you Rachel for another 7 years if you will work for me.” Jacob agreed. When the week of marriage celebrations was over, Laban gave Jacob his daughter Rachel as his wife. Jacob slept with her and loved her more than Leah. He worked for Laban for another 7 years.

When the Lord heard that Leah was less loved than Rachel, the Lord gave Leah 4 sons. Leah named her sons Reuben, Simeon, Levi and Judah.
