Genesis Chapter 28 Bible Study

Isaac told Jacob to not marry a Canaanite and go to Mesopotamia and marry one of his uncle’s, Laban, daughters. He gave him a blessing and said, “May God bless your marriage and give you many children as He blessed Abraham, and may you take possession of this land which Gad gave to Abraham!” Since Esau learned that Jacob had obeyed their parents and gone to Mesopotamia to find a wife, he went to Ismael, son of Abraham and married his daughter Mahalath, who was the sister of Nebaioth.

Jacob left Beersheba and went to Haran. He dreamed about a stairway with the angels going up and coming down from heaven and the Lord standing beside him. “I am the Lord, and I will give to you and your descendants this land as specks on the earth extending in all directions, and I will bless all of the nations. I will protect you wherever you go and will not leave you in this land until I have done according to all that I have promised you.” Jacob said to the Lord, “The Lord is here in this terrifying place! It must be the gate of God that opens into heaven.”

The next morning, Jacob took the stone under his head and poured olive oil on it as God’s memorial dedication. He named the place Bethel. Jacob vowed to the Lord, saying, “If you will protect me on this journey and give me food, and clothing for returning to my father’s home safely, you will be my God. This memorial stone shall be the place for You to worship, and I will give a tenth of everything to You.”
