Genesis Chapter 27 Bible Study

Isaac was becoming blind and asked Esau to hunt an animal and cook food that he likes. He also said that he would give Esau a final blessing before he died. Rebecca heard it and then told Jacob, her son, to bring Isaac’s favorite food to give a blessing. Rebecca helped Jacob to look like Esau by putting on Esau’s best clothes and skins of the goat on Jacob’s arms and the hairless part of his neck. Jacob brought the tasty food that Rebecca made  to Isaac and told him, “I’m your older son, Esau. Give me your blessing.” Isaac wonders how he found it so quickly, so Jacob answered that the Lord God helped him find it. 

Isaac wanted to see if it was really Esau because of Jacob’s voice, so he felt and touched Jacob’s hairy arms and asked him one more time, “Are you really Esau?” After he confirmed with Jacob, he ate some of the meat and drank some of the wine. When Jacob came up to kiss Isaac, Isaac smelled Esau and gave him a blessing. “May God give you plenty of grain and wine. May the nations be your servants and let people and your mother’s descendants bow down to you. May those who curse you be cursed, and may those who bless you be blessed.” 

When Isaac finished giving Jacob his blessing, Esau came back from hunting, cooked tasty food, gave it to his father and asked him for his blessing. Isaac said, “Your brother came, deceived me and took away my blessing.” Jacob took Esau’s firstborn son and all of his blessings, so Esau hated Jacob and planned to kill him after his father’s death. 

When Rebecca heard about Esau’s plan, she sent Jacob to her brother, Laban, in Haran, and asked him to stay there until his brother’s anger cools down. Rebecca told Isaac that she doesn’t want him to marry one of the Hittites because she does not like Esau’s foreign wives.
