Genesis Chapter 26 Bible Study

There was another famine in the land so Isaac went to Abimelech, the king of the Philistines, at Gerar. The Lord had appeared to him and said not to go to Egypt and promised that He would give him a blessing and many descendants because Abraham obeyed Him and kept all His laws and commands, so Isaac lived there. He introduced Rebecca as his sister because he was afraid that the men would kill him to get Rebecca; however, King Abimelech knew that Rebecca was Isaac’s wife and warned the people not to mistreat them. Because the Lord blessed Isaac, he became rich and the Philistines were jealous of him, so they had filled up all the wells that Abraham’s servants had dug out. Then King Abimelech told Isaac to leave the country because he has become more powerful than him. 

Isaac’s servants dug three wells: Quarrel, Enmity and Freedom in a row. Unlike the first two wells when they dug the well, Freedom, there was no dispute, so Isaac said, “The Lord has given us freedom to live and be prosperous in this land.” Isaac departed to Beersheba and the Lord appeared to him, saying, “I am the God of Abraham. Do not be afraid; I am with you. I will give to you many descendants for My promise to your father.” Isaac built an altar, worshiped the Lord and set up camp there. 

King Abimelech went with Ahuzzath and Phicol to see Isaac. Isaac asked, “Why are you friendly now?” They answered, “We know now that the Lord is with you and we should make a solemn agreement. We promise that you will not harm us. We were kind and let you go peacefully.” Isaac prepared a feast for them, and they ate and drank. The next morning, each man made his promise and sealed it with a vow. They parted as friends. Isaac named the new well, “Vow,” the one they found after them. 

When Esau was 40 years old, he married two Hittites, Judith and Basemath. They made life miserable for Isaac and Rebecca.
