Abraham was now very old and the Lord blessed him in everything he did. He asked his oldest servant, who was in charge of Abraham’s property, to get a wife for Isaac from among his relatives. Abraham made sure to the servant that the young woman shouldn’t take his son back there because the Lord brought him from the home of his father and the land of his relatives and promised that He would give the land to his descendants. The servant took his hand between Abraham’s thighs and vowed to do what Abraham had asked.
The servant brought his master’s 10 camels and went to the city where Nahor had dwelt in northern Mesopotamia. He arrived at the well outside the city and prayed to the Lord to give him success in the promise he made with his master. Before he had finished praying, Rebecca arrived with a water jar on her shoulder. She was very beautiful and a virgin. When the servant asked for water from her jar, she answered, “Drink, sir,” and lowered her jar for him. After that, she kept fetching water to the camels until they all had enough. The servant was observing this to see if the Lord had given him success and gave her a gold ring and two large bracelets. When he found out that she is the daughter of Bethuel, the son of Abraham’s brother Nahor and his wife Milcah, he knelt down and worshiped the Lord. He said, “Praise the Lord, the God of my master Abraham, who has faithfully kept his promise to my master. The Lord has led me straight to my master’s relatives.”
The young woman went to her mother’s house and told the whole story. Her brother, Laban, went to the well to invite the servant to his house. He served the man and camels some water and food. The man wanted to say what happened and needed before he ate. He asked Laban and Bethuel whether they made a decision to take Rebecca to be a wife of his master’s son. When the servant heard the acceptance, he bowed down and worshiped the Lord and gave them clothing, jewelry and expensive gifts. After the servant spent the night with them, he told them to let him go back to his master with Rebecca. Even though Rebecca’s brother and mother urged her to stay more, Rebecca decided to go with him. They gave Rebecca this blessing in these words: “May you, sister, become the mother of millions! May your descendants conquer the cities of their enemies!”
After they all were heading out to Abraham’s, Rebecca saw Isaac walking in the field and she learned that he is the master so she covered her face. The servant told Isaac everything that he had done. Isaac brought Rebecca to the tent and she became his wife.
