Genesis Chapter 20 Bible Study

Abraham moved to the southern part of Canaan and lived in Gerar. King Abimelech of Gerar took Sarah because Abraham said that Sarah was his sister. But God came to Abimelech in a dream by night and said, “You are going to die because you have taken the married woman.” Abimelech declared that he had not come near her or done anything wrong. God replied in the dream, “I kept you from sinning against me. Give the woman back to her husband, who is a prophet. He will pray for you and you will not die. If not, you and all your people are going to die.”

Early the next morning, Abimelech called Abraham and asked why he had  done this to them. Abraham said, “I thought that there was no one here who fears God and they would kill me to get my wife, but she is my sister because we have the same father.”

Then Abimelech gave Sarah back to him along with sheep, cattle and servants and allowed him to live anywhere he liked. Also, he said to Sarah that he is giving a thousand pieces of silver to Abraham as proof that she is innocent and that she has done nothing wrong.

Because of what had happened to Sarah, the Lord had made the women in Abimelech’s palace not to have children. Abraham prayed for Abimelech, and God healed him, his wife, and his slave women so that they could have children.
