Genesis Chapter 19 Bible Study

The two angels came to Sodom in the evening and were greeted by Lot who was sitting in Sodom’s gate. When Lot got up, he bowed before the angels and invited them to his place, but the angels refused. Lot kept urging them so the angels agreed and went to his house. Lot told his servants to bake bread with a fine meal for the guests. When the meal was ready, they ate it. All the men of the city of Sodom surrounded the house before the guests went to bed and asked Lot to bring them out. Lot pleaded not to bother them and offered his two daughters instead. When they got wild and tried to break down the door, the two men inside reached Lot, pulled him back into the house and shut the door. Then the two men made the outside men blind so that they couldn’t see the door.

Then the two men told Lot, “If you have anyone else living with you, take them out of here. We are going to destroy this place because the Lord heard our terrible judgments against these people.” At dawn, the angels told Lot to leave the city quickly to save their lives, but Lot hesitated. The Lord had pity on him; so the men took them by the hand and led them out of the city. One of the angels asked them to run to the hills for their lives and warned them not to look back or stop. The men waited until they reached the small city named Zoar. After they got there, the Lord rained burning sulfur on the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah and destroyed everything there. Lot’s wife turned into a pillar of salt after she looked back. Abraham found out that God had destroyed all the cities of the valley where Lot was living, but Lot was saved because He kept Abraham in His mind.

Lot and his two daughters lived in a cave when they moved up into the hills because Lot was afraid to stay in Zoar. Lot is getting older and there are no men to marry to his daughters. The two daughters made him get drunk and slept with him. Each of them had a son; the older one’s son is Moab, the ancestor of the present-day Moabites, and the younger one’s son is Benammi, the ancestor of the present-day Ammonites.
