Genesis Chapter 18 Bible Study

Then the Lord appeared to Abraham near the sacred trees of Mamre. When Abraham was sitting at the tent in the heat of the day, he saw three men there and ran out to meet them. Then he bowed with his face toward the ground, saying, “I am here to serve you. Let me give you some water and food as the strength to continue on your journey.” They said, “Thank you; we accept.”

Abraham told Sarah to bake some bread with the best flour. Afterward, he took a fat and tender calf from the herd with some cream, milk and meat before the men underneath the tree and they ate. They asked about Sarah and told him that she will have a son. Sarah laughed to herself because she and Abraham are too old to have a son. The Lord asked Abraham about why she laughed and doubted His Almighty power. Because Sarah was afraid, she denied that she laughed.

Then the men and Abraham went to the place where they could look down at Sodom. The Lord said that His descendants will be blessed of having great and mighty nations, and that He has chosen them to obey God and do what is right and just. Then the Lord said to Abraham that He heard that Sodom and Gomorrah’s sins are great. So the two men went down to find out, but the Lord stayed with Abraham.

Abraham asked the Lord, “Are you really going to destroy the whole city and spare it in order to save the fifty? Impossible! The judge has to act justly in all the earth.” The Lord answered, “I will spare the whole city for their sake if I find fifty innocent people in Sodom.” Abraham kept lowering down the number of innocent people to spare the city until they had reached 10. After they had finished speaking, the Lord departed and Abraham returned home.
