Genesis Chapter 17 Bible Study

When Abram was 99 years old, the Lord said to him “I’m the Almighty  God. Obey me and do the right things. I will make my covenant with you.” Abram bowed down with his face to the ground and the Lord told him: “Because I am making you the ancestor of many nations, you will be called Abraham. I will give you many descendants, and some of them will be kings and they will become nations. I will keep my promise to you and to your descendants as an everlasting covenant. I will be your God and the God of your descendants and give you the whole land of Canaan. You must also agree to keep this promise for future generations between you and your descendants and to circumcise every male among you: eight-day-old baby boys, slaves born in your homes or foreign slaves. This will be a sign of the everlasting covenant. 

God told Abraham, “Your wife’s name shall become Sarah. I will bless her and give you a son by her; she will become the mother of nations.” 

Abraham bowed down with his face to the ground but laughed because Sarah is too old to have a child. God said, “Sarah will bear you a son, Isaac. I will keep My covenant with him and his descendants forever. I also will bless Ishmael and give him many children and descendants after him.” 

Abraham obeyed God’s words and circumcised himself, Ishmael, his son, and all the other males in his household.
