Genesis Chapter 15 Bible Study

After these things the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision, saying, “Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your mighty shield and give you a great reward.”

But Abram said, “Lord, what good will Your reward give me, since I have no children? My only heir is Eliezer of Damascus, who is a slave.” The Lord said “ Your own son will inherit your property and you will have as many descendants as the stars in the sky.” Abram trusted the Lord, and He was pleased, saying, “I am the Lord, who led you out of Ur in Babylonia, to give you this land as your own.” Abram asked, “O sovereign Lord, how can I know that the land will be mine?” 

So He said to him, “Bring Me a cow, a goat and a ram, each 3 years old, and a dove and pigeon.” Vultures came down on the animals’ bodies, but Abram drove them out because he cut the animals in half and split the animals opposite each other in two rows; he didn’t cut up the birds. 

When the sun went down, Abram fell to a deep sleep, and fear and terror was upon him. The Lord said to Abram, “Your descendants will be slaves and treated cruelly in a foreign land for 400 years. But I will punish the nation that enslaves them, and when they leave, they will have great wealth with them. You will live a long and good life, die in peace and be buried. It will be four generations before your descendants shall come back, because I will not drive the Amorites out until they are wicked, and they will be punished.” 

When the sun had set and it was dark, a smoking fire pot and flaming torch passed between the animals’ pieces. The Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying: “I promise to give your descendants all of the land from the border of Egypt to the River Euphrates.”
