Genesis Chapter 12 Bible Study

The Lord told Abram to leave his country, relatives and his father’s home, and then go to a new land. The Lord also told Abram that He will have many descendants and they will become a great nation and to make Abram famous and a blessing. When Abram was 75, he took his wife, his nephew, Lot, and all of his belongings to head off to Canaan. When they entered Canaan, Abram went through the land to the sacred tree of Moreh, a holy place at Shechem. The Lord appeared and told Abram, “This is the country which I am giving to your descendants.” Then Abram built an altar to the Lord. After that, Abram moved southward to the hill country near Bethel and made his camp between the cities of Bethel and Ai. There he also built an altar and worshiped the Lord. He moved on, going toward the southern part of Canaan, but there was a bad famine, so Abram moved further south to Egypt to live there for a while. When he was about to cross the border into Egypt, Abram told his wife Sarai, “You are a beautiful woman. When the Egyptians come to see you, tell them that you are my sister because they will let me live and treat me well.” When he walked the border, some of the court officials told the king how beautiful the woman was; so she was taken to the king's palace. The king treated Abram very well and gave him sheep, goats, cattle, donkeys, slaves and camels. Because the king had taken Sarai, the Lord sent terrible diseases to him and his people. Then the king asked Abram, “What have you done to me? Why didn’t you tell me that your sister was your wife? Take her and get out!” The king commanded his men, so they took Abram out of the country together with his wife and everything he owned.
