Genesis Genesis Bible Study

In the beginning, the people of the world had one language and spoke the same words. As the people wandered in the East, the people settled in a city named Babylonia. The people decided to bake some bricks and built a giant tower to reach the sky and live in the tower so that they won’t be scattered all over the earth. The Lord came down to see the tower and said, “They are one people and speak one language; this is only the beginning. Let us mix up their languages so that they won’t understand each other.” The Lord scattered people all over the world and they stopped building the city. Because of that, the city was named Babylon.

These are all of Shem’s descendants. Shem had a son named Arpachshad after the flood. Shortly after that, Shem lived another 500 years and had other children. When Arpachshad was 35, he had a son named Shelah, lived another 403 years and had other children. When Shelah was 30, he had a son named Eber, lived another 403 years and had other children. When Peleg was also 30, he had a son named Reu. Peleg lived another 207 years and had other children. When Reu was 32, he had a son named Serug, lived another 207 years and had other children. When Serug was 30, he had a son named Nahor, lived another 200 years and had other children. When Nahor was 29 years old, he had a son named Terah, lived another 119 years and had other children. After Terah was 70, he became the father of Abram, Nahor and Haran.

Haran was Lot’s father and died in his home near Ur in Babylonia, while his father was still living. Abram married Sarai, and his brother, Nahor, married Milcah, the daughter of Haran and sister of Iscah. Sarai was not able to have children.

Terah brought his son, Abram, his grandson, Lot, the son of Haran, and Sarai, his daughter-in-law to the land of Canaan and they settled there.
