Exodus Chapter 22 Bible Study

“If a man steals a cow or sheep, kills or sells it, he must pay five cows for one cow and four sheep for one sheep. If he owns nothing, he will be a slave to pay for what he has stolen. If the stolen animal is alive, he shall pay two for one. If a thief breaks into a house at night and is killed, the one who killed him won’t be guilty of murder; however, if that happens again during the day, he will be guilty of murder.

If someone’s animals eats up the crops from someone else’s field or vineyard, he will make good the loss with the crops from his own fields or vineyards. If someone starts a fire in his own field to spread through someone else’s field and burns up, he will pay for the damage. If someone keeps someone else’s money or other valuables and are stolen, the thief, if found, shall repay double; if not, the one who keeps the valuables will be brought to the place of worship and make an oath that he has not stolen the other one’s property. If two people are claiming the property, they shall be taken to the place of worship and God will declare on who will be guilty. The guilty shall pay double to the other one.

If someone else’s animal dies or is injured while someone keeps and has no witness, the man will be brought to the place of worship and make an oath that he has not stolen the other man’s animal. If the animal was stolen, the man must repay the owner. If it was killed by wild animals, the man shows the evidence and doesn’t need to pay for what has been killed by wild animals. If anyone borrows an animal from someone else and is injured or dies when the owner is not present, he will pay for it; however, if it happens when the owner is present, he won’t repay it. If an animal is rented, the loss is covered by the rental price.

If a man seduces a virgin who is not engaged, he will pay the bride price and marry her. If her father refuses, he must pay the bride price a sum of money that will be equal to the bride price of a virgin. Put to death any woman who practices magic and anyone who has sexual relations with an animal. Condemn to death anyone who offers sacrifices to any god except to Me, the Lord. Do not mistreat any foreigner, widow or orphan. If you lend money to any poor people, do not act like a moneylender, but ask him to pay interest.

If you take someone’s cloak as a pledge to him paying you, you shall give it back to him before the sun sets to make him sleep in. Do not say bad things about God or curse any leader of your people. Give me the offerings when they are due, and your firstborn sons, cattle and sheep. The first-born male will be offered on the eighth day. You are My people, so you must not eat the meat of any animal that has been killed by wild animals.”
